The NNCC offers four (4) certification exams.

Certified Nephrology Nurse (CNN)

Eligibility Requirements
  1. A current license as a registered nurse in the United States or its territories.
  2. Within 3 years prior to application, a minimum of 2 years of nephrology experience as a registered nurse with at least 50% of employment hours spent in nephrology nursing.
  3. Minimum of baccalaureate degree in nursing.
  4. Thirty (30) hours of approved continuing education in nephrology nursing within 3 years prior to submission of application for certification.



Certified Dialysis Nurse (CDN)

Eligibility Requirements
  1. A current license as a registered nurse in the United States or its territories.
  2. Within two (2) years prior to application, complete a minimumm of one year full-time or the equivalent of 2000 hours in dialysis nursing.
  3. Fifteen (15) hours of approved continuing education in nephrology nursing within 2 years prior to submission of application for certification.



Certified Clincial Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT)

Eligibility Requirements
  1. Minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED).
  2. Successful completion of a training program for hemodialysis patient care technician that includes both classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience.
  3. Signature of preceptor/supervisor to verify training and clinical experience. It is recommended but not required, that an applicant have a minimum of six months or the equivalent (1000 hours) of full-time experience.
  4. Be in compliance with state regulations of the practice of hemodialysis patient-care technicians, if applicable. Applicants must meet the experience requirement (for certification) of the state in which they practice.


 
Certified Nephrology Nurse - Nurse Practitioner (CNN-NP)

Eligibility Requirements



  1. The applicant must hold a full and unrestricted license as a registered nurse in the United States, or its territories and be nationally certified as a nurse practitioner.
  2. The applicant must possess a minimum of a Master’s of Science degree in nursing.
  3. The applicant must have a minimum of 2000 hours as a nephrology nurse-nurse practitioner within two years prior to submitting this application.
  4. The applicant must have completed sixty contact hours of approved continuing education credit in nephrology within two years prior to submitting this application.
  5. Continuing education must be approved by one of the following:
    • Organizations accredited by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center – Commission on Accreditation (ANCC-COA) the credentialing body of the American Nurses Association.
      For example, The American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA), which is both an accredited provider and approver of CE in nursing.
    • Organizations accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
      For example, the American Society of Nephrology, and the Office of Continuing Education, School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia that sponsors the Annual Dialysis Conference.
    • The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
    • The Council of Continuing Education.
    • California, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, or Ohio State Boards of Nursing.
Please be aware that although programs may meet requirements set forth by other state boards of nursing, they may not meet the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission criteria.
