In order to recertify, one will need 60 points of credit as well as verification of a minimum of 2,000 hours (1 year) of addictions nursing experience as a registered nurse in a staff, administrative, teaching, consultation, private practice, counseling, or research capacity within the past four years. At least 51% of the 60 CEU’s for recertification must be directly related to Addictions Nursing.
Late CARN Requirements
- Certification renewal applications will be accepted up to two years after the certification has expired, with a $100 fee in addition to the basic recertification fee.
- The ability to practice may be impacted if the state or workplace requires certification to practice and the certification has expired. The responsibility lies with registered nurse to maintain certification.
- Once the certification has expired, the credential can no longer be used.
- The credential may be reinstated only under the following conditions:
- recertification by examination, or
- successful recertification by application within the 2-year period after the certification has expired (all requirements must be fulfilled prior to the expiration of the 2-year period) *NOTE: effective July 1, 2018, the 2-year grace period will discontinue, and the credential may be reinstated only by recertification by examination.

Recertification is conducted twice a year. Applications are due June 30 and December 31 for the respective testing periods.*NOTE: Effective November 2016, candidates who are successful on the examination in the current, year-round testing will begin their certification in the month they passed the exam and will expire in the same month after 4 (four) years.

Current license as an RN in the United States, its territories, or Canada. |

Minimum of 2 years of plastic surgical nursing experience as an RN. |

Spend at least 50% of practice hours in plastic surgical nursing during 2 of the preceding 5 years. |

Be in compliance with state regulations of the practice of hemodialysis patient-care technicians, if applicable. Applicants must meet the experience requirement (for certification) of the state in which they practice. |
